18–27 July 2014 | Articulate Project Space, Leichhardt, SydneyCurated by Elisabeth Warren | Artists: Dorit Goldman, Janine Bailey and Mel Baveas (then exhibiting as Melissa Maree)

Artsider was a collaborative exhibition presented at Articulate Project Space in July 2014, bringing together three Sydney College of the Arts artists—Dorit Goldman, Janine Bailey and Mel Baveas, who at the time exhibited under the alias Melissa Maree. Curated by Elisabeth Warren, the exhibition explored artistic labour, process, spatial intervention and the relationship between live and documented practice.

For me, the exhibition represents an early stage of my multidisciplinary artistic practice and my engagement with collaborative and process-based exhibition making. My practice at the time incorporated painting, drawing, photographic collage, sculpture, textiles and repurposed everyday materials, with an emphasis on transformation, repetition and the evolving nature of the artwork.

The Artsider project positioned the gallery as an active working environment rather than simply a space for displaying finished objects. Across the exhibition period, the artists worked within the gallery, producing, altering and documenting works and allowing the space and artworks to continually evolve.

This exhibition is particularly significant within my practice as an early documented presentation of my work at Articulate Project Space, and as part of my development as an artist working across material, spatial and process-based practices.

Note: The contemporary source records the artist under the name Melissa Maree. On your website, I would identify this as “Mel Baveas (then exhibiting as Melissa Maree)” so the historical record remains accurate while connecting the work to your current name.
